Is Removing the Prostate Common?

Prostatectomy is a common surgical procedure, especially for the treatment of prostate cancer. In the United States, prostatectomy is one of the most commonly performed cancer surgeries for men. According to the American Cancer Society, about 180,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and most of these men will undergo some form of treatment, including surgery.

While prostatectomy is a common procedure, it is not always the first choice of treatment for prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In some cases, less invasive treatments, such as medication or radiation therapy, may be used to manage these conditions.

The decision to undergo a prostatectomy should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider and based on the individual's specific condition, overall health, and treatment goals. It is important to carefully weigh the potential benefits and risks of any treatment option before making a decision.
